We spent the first two weeks in April moving into our new shop/office space. Our lease in the old space was up, and we needed the change to a more secure and quieter location.

 

 

 

 

We received the Edgetech 4125 side Scan Sonar March 20th, that we had ordered 6 weeks previously. Our intention was to incorporate it into the Nova Ray system. With a tow fish weighing over 40 pounds, it would require removing it from its own watertight housing and creating a new lighter weight housing that could mount under the Nova Ray. The transducers fit nicely on the existing skids, we only had to change the angle of the mounting hardware to capture the correct transducer angle.

After building the watertight housing for the Edgetech, and modifying the connectors to fit the NovaRay, we were ready to mobilize back to Florida to get everything working and begin surveying again.

Our crew arrived in Florida April 16 and 17th, and all of our gear made the trip safely. We assembled the system and dry fired everything up making sure TSA hadn’t caused any damage during transit.

There was a pool located conveniently next door, and the owner was gracious enough to allow us to balance the Nova Ray with its new payload in a work friendly environment. Amazingly very little adjustments were necessary to get the vehicle balanced, and we were ready to get it into the boat a begin surveying.

The resolution of the new Side Scan Sonar by Edgetech added a completely new dimension to the Nova Ray’s underwater “vision” and the ability for an even more efficient survey process. With the Blue View 2250-900 dual head forward scan sonar, combined with Edgetech’s dual head side scan sonar, the Nova Ray system could “see” 75 yards forward and up to 120 meters on each side of the vehicle. Plus the resolution of each sonar gave an unparalleled view of the sea floor, even traveling at 3 knots.

We were able to complete the survey of the potential shipwreck site in two days, and spent the rest of the time practicing on known objects to build our data base of sonar images for recognition purposes down the road.

The crew wrapped up operations on May 1st, and returned to Seattle to prepare for the next project and work on the new Nova Ray design. We will be back in Florida the week of June 3rd, gearing for the project in England.
